Booting problem

I have recently built a new PC with a Fujitsu Siemens D1675 motherboard, Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz CPU, GeForce FX 5700 LE 128MB graphics, DVD-R/W card and Caviar 200GB HDD (Plus other bits but I have stripped it down to those to work out why it’s not working)

I installed Windows XP SP2 on it with no problems until I restart, then it gets to the point of loading the Windows XP startup screen (The first screen with the blue progress indicator), then the logo goes a strange colour and it stops.

I have tried it in safe mode and it gets to the same point and the screen goes strange and it stops.

I have replaced the motherboard and it still does the same, any ideas what might cause this?

I had this exact same problem on my other PC.
The motherboard was a Soltek something, and every time SP2 went on, it froze on the boot up screen. In the end, there was a patch on their website which fixed it.

That will be the problem.

Whose website? Microsoft or the motherboard manufacturers?

The motherboard’s.

It could be a number of things, but if it’s a new PC, and given Fujitsu aren’t the most reliable hardware manufacturers…it’s likely to be them.

You probably may know, but all Fujitsu hard disks made from 2000 onwards died after a while due to the varnish on the circuit board corroding it away. It happened to three of my disks, back in 02.

Thanks, I’ll have a look, but even if i do find one, I won’t be able to install it if I can’t boot the machine

I’ll have to find a copy of XP without SP2 on it.

Thanks for the suggestion, I got hold of a copy of Windows XP Home SP1 and it works great!

Glad it works!

I will try and find you a patch so that you can install SP2. Failing that, keep SP1, otherwise you’ll be locked out of your PC again. I seriously had to reinstall XP about 12 times cos my SP2 froze up.
