im looking for a dvd burner and they have basicly the same specs on +/-R and +/- RW. Some have 2MB cache and some have 4 or 8 and the price is like nearly triple. what does the cache do.

It’s a buffer, which helps out in preventing buffer underruns in addition to the anti-buffer underrunning technologies. Basically, larger caches allow more data to be stored locally for burning or to be sent out for processing. It’s there to keep the data flowing smoothly.
a 2mb cache should be alright for makin home dvds and such.
Yeah. I’ve not had any problems with my DVD burner which has only 2MB of cache. While I’m sure the added cache can help, after awhile, it becomes too much marketing and not actual effectiveness. I haven’t seen tests run with 4MB and 8MB cache drives, but given the limitations on spindle speeds of these drives, I’d wager that 8MB would be pushing it for the extra money and extra cash combo.
With most software now supporting anti-buffer underun, 2mb will be fine. As long as you don’t do anything CPU intensive during the burning process.
