Can I replace my cd-rw drive with a dvd-rw drive??

Hi all…wonder if anyone can help me with my wee query… i have a sony vaio pcv-rx402 computer with a cd-rw drive…however i am wondering if i could upgrade this to a dvd-rw drive ??? If anyone could help in this it would be greatly appreciated.. :good:

Cheers

Sony Vaio? Forgive my ignorance but I’m assuming that’s a laptop. I don’t know a whole lot about laptops but I think the connections for these devices are vendor-specific. That means it should be easy enough to upgrade it so long as you get one that has a compatible connection type (so for example a DVD-RW for a Compaq laptop may not fit into yours). Have you had a look at Sony’s website?

Thanx for your reply the sony vaio is a desktop pc…could you help any further?

I don’t see why not. Just unscrew the old drive, unplug and remove. Put in dvd drive, plug in and screw it in.

Good, that makes your job a lot easier. Does it use a standard IDE interface? If so then upgrading is a fairly trivial exercise.

Yes, it uses a standard ide interface…have been searching sony websites for a dvd-r that will fit to no avail… :frowning:

all dvd drives that are ATX will fit..that’s unless your PC isn’t atx which all Vaio’s (3) i’ve worked on are ATX

Cant seem to find one that fits into the tower…they are all too wide…dont suppose you have any help for this…would rather have an internal drive rather that an external drive

Thanx :good:

yeah, just buy a dvd-rw drive, and install any drivers needed, you might want to uninstall any old drivers

This is driving me insane

Thanx

i have seen slimline drives somewhere, but that wouldnt solve the problem of it being too wide :x: erm, try looking on the sony site or contacting a dealer and see if you can pick up a compatible one from them.

13cm is 5.25" right?

actually come to think of it, yes it is,

then it should fit : / whats the height of the drive, that might be the problem

I think you are just confused… All CD/DVD drives that I have seen (internal) will fit into any standard case. Is there another size?

Sony Vaio drive is a different size to the standard one
:frowning:

5.25" is ATX width for any internal optical drive. Any ATX dvd-rom drive will fit

Unless sony doesn’t follow ATX.

ATX optical drives are around 4cm tall

if you can pull out the drive in there curently and measure how tall it is that would help
