i turned my old pc on [have not used for a long time] to find the cd and dvd drives do not appare in my computer.

Can you see them under the device manager?
Do they appear in the boot sequence or BIOS?
If they don’t, i would open your computer up and make sure the Molex or IDE cables have not come loose or unplugged.
