Computer Forum New Build / Upgrade Advice

Hey all,

I’ve been looking around to build a new computer with a budget of around $1,000. I spend a lot of time on my computer and play plenty of games, mostly older ones (CS:S especially), but I’ll play newer ones that my computer can handle (Oblivion hopefully).

So far, this is what I’m thinking:

I’m sure this will run CS:S just fine, and probably handle a lot of newer games decently also, but I want to make sure I have everything I need, it’s all good quality and compatible, etc. Also if any of you see a chance for improvement, I’m very open to suggestions.

Some particular things I’m wondering:

  • Will that RAM work with that MB? Some reviews said it runs at a strange voltage that some MB don’t support.

  • Is Vista 64-bit a good choice at this time? I probably won’t be able to run really, REALLY old games (like Thief <3), but will it support most software back to 5 years ago without many problems?

Any input is much appreciated.

That ram shoudl work just fine for you. Gigabyte gives more than enough options in the BIOS to up the voltage and timings.

You have got a problem with that build though. That power supply is complete crap. Rosewell, I believe, is the Newegg brand – I have never heard any good things about it. Another problem with it is that it is only 400W. That is absolutely bare minimum low, as in barely getting by low. You really will want to invest in a better power supply to protect your components.
