Comp not detecting ethernet

Hi, my friend brought his computer over to my house, and I wanted to connect his computer to my Microsoft MS-150 router so he can get an internet connection, but his computer (Newly installed XP Pro SP1), won’t detect any internet connection. Under Network Places there is only a single 1394 Connection, which I assume is FireWire and unrelated.

If I try to add a new connection nothing happens. The Router has room for 4 ethernet connections, one of them is filled by my computer, in which the internet works fine for. I know it’s not the cable (i’ve tried many), or the router, so It must be something with the software.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

but are you able to setup the gateway ip addresses (and the like)?

How would I go about doing that?

All it says it that it has 1 connections via 1394.

ahh yes! sorry i missread your post

erm, it seems its disabled in bios, or lack of drivers (or driver fault) for your lan card (or onboard lan) have you checked this?

I’ll check the bios now. The LAN is on the motherboard, so I don’t think drivers are an issue, although I may be wrong.

yeah you need drivers for XP mate
simple check, press and hold START button on keyboard and press BREAK button, open device manager (from hardware) if it is enabled in bios it will show up, but have issues associated with it.

the drivers will be on the manufacturer’s website, or of course on the cd

Ok, I think it is enabled on the BIOS since there is only one thing “MAC Lan” and the only two options are “Auto” or “Disabled” so I left it on auto. I guess I have to install new drivers then. Would I just install the motherboard drivers?

put your mobo cd in the drive, it should auto-run and load a menu, install the LAN drivers and reset.

erm, also go into device manager and see if there are any issues with the lan there, if LAN is enabled ok in bios it will show up in there, but if you cant see it i’d go back into bios and have a bigger look.

if there’s a problem with the LAN (or driver issues) it will tell you in device manager, if all seems ok (and its the right LAN) let us know
