Computer keeps restarting...

Just ordered a bunch of parts, and just got done putting it together…

Except, Windows takes a really long time to start up, and when it does, it doesn’t last long before the computer restarts.

I went into the BIOS, and the CPU is running at 38*C, so it shouldn’t be that…
Also, I have a 500watt PSU, so that shouldn’t be it either..

what’s the problem?

Specs:
AMD 3700+
X850XT
2gb RAM
300gb SATAII 16mb Cache HD
DVD-burner
DVD-Rom

What make/model is your PSU?

yeh that will most likely be the psu, thats a hell of a system, and will demand a quality PSU, regardless of wattage.

Why you don’t want a cheap PSU.

Just read up on that…It’s a Rosewill 500w…

Here are the specs of it:

+3.33v
30A

+5v
45A

+12v
26A

On the back, the voltage switch is on 115v…should it be there or on 230v?

Alright, just read another thread…

You have to install drivers for a SATA drive when installing windows…is this correct?

If so, would that be what is causing the problems?

Also, where would I find the drivers? (my HD was an OEM)

If you are planning on booting Windows from a SATA drive, than yes, you’d need to load the drivers into memory before you even began the Windows installation process. Otherwise, it wouldn’t even detect your HDD at all. If you’re not using a SATA HDD, installing the SATA drivers is optional but recommended, although that would not cause your problems anyway. If you haven’t installed the drivers for your motherboard, video card, etc, you should definately do so.

Okay, I don’t think it’s my HD that’s causing the problems.

…I reinstalled windows, this time installing the drivers for the SATA HD…same thing.

I then unplugged the SATA HD, Plugged in an IDE HD, and installed windows…same thing.

What else could it be?!?!

Okay…It’s not my memory, as I ran MemTest86 on my computer, and it did 8 passes with no errors…

That leaves 3 things:

CPU Over Heating
Busted GFX Card
PSU not dealing enough power.

…researching PSU’s, the amount of watts and amps it deals out on the 12v/5v/3.3v rails, it should be fine, so I really don’t believe it’s that…

Upon booting up, my CPU is at an avg. of 38*C, but I don’t think that just loading up windows would cause such a temperature increase that it won’t even load it up all the way, and when it does, restarting windows.

which leaves…my gfx card…how could I test that?

EDIT: I’d put in another gfx card to test it, but I don’t have any other PCIe cards :[

Also, to make sure it wasn’t my copy of windows, I borrowed one from a friend to try it…same result.

EDIT X2:

Okay, I just got it to fully load up windows in regular mode (Only way I could get it before was through safe mode), it still took a really, really long time. What I did prior to it was reseat the gfx card in the other PCIe slot, and put the fan on my PSU on ‘High’ instead of ‘Auto’

I did that, except, it wasn’t recognizing either of my Disc Drives (had them in IDE slot 1…) Because of that, I tried to set up the network/internet on it, but had to restart afterwards, and now windows won’t boot up again.

which leads me to believe that it is me PSU? I don’t really understand how, it meets all of the benchmarks…

Loading it up again, it was on the windows loading screen for a good 10 minutes, then went black…then a blue screen showed up with writing for a split second, then restarted…

In case anyone was wondering, I have this PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817182009
