My system, a P4 VIA 823x motherboard with a 128 memory, 20GB hard disk and a 2.4GHZ Intel Celeron processor has had a problem just shutting down without any prompt. I changed the power supply to a known working one and no difference it made. Changed the CPU fun still did not make any change. I also removed the hardisk and no change. I resit the cpu but it made no difference. No PCI or AGP cards in. The motherboard and processor is just seven months old.
Sometimes it would work for sometime like a whole day and no problem but it can just decide to switch off as often a every 20min.
it sounds to me either a Power management issue but it could be something overheating, go it the BIOS and disable everything to do with Power management, are you useing windows, if so which version ?
I am using windows 2000 pro. Right now I cant reach even the BIOS. As soon as it starts the machine and does the first beep it switches off. Something could be overheating may be the CPU. I have to try another CPU fan.

Did you change just the fan or the entire heatsink and fan unit?
If you changed out the heatsink, did you clean off the thermal pad/thermal paste and reapply a thin layer of thermal paste? If not, that could be the problem.
I only changed the cpu fan and not the heatsink. I dont have the thermal paste so I will try to reset the BIOS as it had jumped my mind, thank you donkey42.
