Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone can help.
I have had this custom built pc for a couple of years, and it has given me trouble for most of that time. I can’t remember the full spec off hand but if it is needed I’ll edit this post when I’m back at home.
A few months after I got the computer, it refused to start up and we diagnosed the problem to be the CPU, and replaced it. Everything else seemed to work ok. But for a while now (can’t remember if this started happening before the CPU issue or after), the monitor screen will temporarily flicker.
The screen flickers pink in wide horizontal lines (not just one pixel, but a couple of inches), and it will switch randomly between flickering faintly and then shocking pink. This can happen for about a second or for tens of seconds, there doesn’t seem to be any discernable pattern to it.
What I’ve done to try to diagnose the problem:
Made sure the monitor cable is secure to the monitor and the computer
Changed the monitor cable
Used a different monitor
Opened the computer and made sure the graphics card is secure
Swapped the graphics card for a different one of the same model and spec known to work correctly
Swapped the graphics card to the other graphics port on the computer.
I’ve even done made things like plugging the computer in to different sockets in a different room, and ensured it’s nowhere near any sources of interference e.g. speakers and the like
All to no avail. The problem is intermittent and the computer can work fine for weeks and then do the flicker off and on for days at a time before settling down again.
As an aside I’ve had to plug a second monitor in as I now need two monitors for a job I’m doing at home. I’m a bit hesitant to do this with it working a bit funny on just the one, but I don’t have a choice. It will be interesting to see if the flicker happens across both monitors (which I’m expecting), or just the one (which will be very weird indeed!)
I’m at the point now where I’m starting to suspect the motherboard, can anyone tell me if I’m missing something or is this likely to be the case?
Many thanks for reading!
