DLink 905DX Hub setup please

Hi guys,

I recently bought a DLink 905DX from ebay. It came with a power cable (nothing else.)

I’m having trouble getting it all to work.

My setup is like:

NTL modem → hub> pc1 + pc2

(using straight ethernet cables).

The internet simply does not work (I have yet not tried file sharing but from what I can see thats not going to work either).

I’m running winxp sp2.

Is the hub ment to come with a cd or something? :S (First time I’m networking).

I’ve tried resetting ip address, tried restarting modem + hub but all have failed.

Please advise.

Hi, also another quick connection. When going from modem-> a non autosensing mdi/mdx hub is crossover or straight ethernet needed?

Just need to check a few things first:

Can you confirm that your NTL modem is actually a router? Can you log into the NTL modem via a web browser?

my model is not a router (as far as I am aware). It’s just the standard modem they give when you get the internet with them.

Can you give me the model number? I need to be sure it’s not a router before we proceed.

Assuming it’s not a router, you cannot use your D-Link hub with it. You will need to purchase a router.

I have a wireless router (linksys which is a pain in the ass) but I don’t seem to understand. I thought that hubs were ment to seperate connections and that was the primary task?

The NTL modem is not a router.

The reason you can’t use your hub is this: NTL have only assigned you with one IP address, but each computer needs it’s own IP address. The hub you have bought does not provide private IP addresses like a router does, therefore you cannot use it in this scenario.

You will have to purchase a router, or use your wireless router for internet sharing.
Alternatively, you could install a second network card in your Windows XP machine (assuming you are running XP Professional) and use that to share the internet.

Could you recommend an alternative cheap hub/switch/router that does support private ips?

cheap as in under £20?

A router provides NAT (network address translation), which is what gives your computers a private IP.
