I have a pc w/ two dvd drives and they’re being ‘forgotten’ by the pc after a while. could those drives really require drivers?

no, are they recognized in the BIOS / boot sequence
So, up until yesterday, only one drive on bootup was detected (which later disappeared when using the OS), but the other wasn’t. That made me worry. I opened the case and removed both drives to see if jumpers were incorrectly configured. Everything seemed to be fine. Reconnected everything nice and firmly and :doh: now they’re being detected and haven’t disappeared since.
Funny, what might’ve been the problem… no power issues, obviously, because the undetected drive could be opened.
