DVD Playback - Choppy Audio

Please Help!

The audio is very choppy when playing DVD’s directly through my laptops DVD player. The video is smoothe but the audio seems to skip every few seconds or so. I also notice that my HD light is in sync with the audio when it skips. If I happen to watch a few mintues of a DVD and it starts skipping, I can stop the DVD and restart it. When I do this it will play the previously played portion of the DVD perfectly.

Also noted:
I can play CD’s with no problem. My audio works great with all other applications.

It seems as though when playing a DVD, the HD light flickers while playing… possibly causing the audio error. Is my HD trying to access the DVD?

Thank you in advace for your help! I have no clue how to fix this. It seems as if it started out of the blue.

The HD activity points to the direction of lack of RAM. Whats probably happening is that your PC runs out of usable RAM and in Windows it resorts to using the Pagefile on the hardware as virtual memory. This is much slower than normal RAM and so you get the choppyness.

Right click My Computer>Properties and please post the Processor and amount of RAM it lists.

Thank you for your help

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
997 MHz 1.00 GB of RAM

I tried to free up my resources by not having my programs start when windows starts. I manually start them now. I thought it may help but unfortunately I still have the same problem after reboot.

It seems as though the whole thing is choppy. Audio and Visual =(
LOL I am very familiar with my way around a computer… but unfortunately lack the experience in this area.

That shouldn’t be happening with a system like that. Have you tried a different DVD playback software?

Do videos stored on your HDD play like that (with the choppiness)?

That is a good question. I will attempt to backup one of my DVD’s on my HD and see how it works.

I am not sure if this is related, but when backing up my home DVD’s it used to only take about 30 minutes to read a DVD. Now it takes at least 2 hours to read any given DVD. Not sure if this is related but thought it may be of some help.

I will get back to you as soon as I try playing one directly from my HD.

Thanks you

Could be a faulty DVD drive.

The movies play great on the HD.

Thank you for the help everyone! I will try and get a new DVD player/burner installed soon. Have a great evening.

Glad to help, I reckon the DVD Drive isn’t reading things quick enough and can’t keep up with the video, try and get a replacement from the people who make the laptop if you can (if it’s under warranty/guarantee that should be good)
