All of a sudden, Enlightenment seems very stable I downloaded Elive 0.5 last night and gave it a spin and it didn’t crash once. Likewise, Enlightenment on Ubuntu is a much nicer affair then it was even a few months ago.
Enlightenment is a desktop environment like KDE and GNOME. But Enlightenment is more about art and eye-candy, rather then functionality. Believe me when I say that no screenshots do Enlightenment justice! The only way to witness the beautifal eye-candy is to install it.
If you want to install it in *ubuntu, do the following:

The default theme wasn’t to my taste but there are others out there and more will come as it reaches 0.17 release.
An important thing to note about enightenment is it does not use hardware acceleration, purely software. You would think this is a bad thing but in fact e17 is the FASTEST window manager ever built and without the aid of a high-end gfx card. You can run this on a system with an integrated video card and it will fly.
