Ethernet drivers refuse to install

This less than 2 year old Compaq computer was attacked by malware of unknown kind and origin. The malware problem has been solved and the computer is running all applications very well.
However, connecting to the internet is not possible 'cause the ethernet drivers will not install, even from the installation disk. The message is that the drivers are either missing or corrupt. I installed a new ethernet card and got the same results. Drivers are corrupt or missing. I thought I could by pass the whole ethernet problem by using a USB connection to the cable modem. Same results. The drivers were either missing or corrupt. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, enabled, disabled but can not make a connection using the original ethernet adapter, the new ethernet adapter or a USB connection. I am wide open to any reasonable suggestions which might allow me to reconnect to the internet.
Thank you for any help,
Jerry D.

are you sure ?

uninstall the NIC in device manager & reboot, XP will detect the NIC and either prompt you for the installation media of use a generic driver[ot]installation may work if you copy the installation media to HDD and install from the directory you copy it to[/ot]

Hi Donkey,

That does not work. The result is that the card is seen by the OS but will not install any driver, generic or on a disk. I thought installing a new ethernet card would allow the OS to PnP. The card was seen but the the drivers will not load.
Thanks,
Jerry D.

 PnP = Plug and Play

 do you mean the NIC is recognized by the OS but the driver will not install, is there a yellow exclamation mark over the NIC in device manager, if there is, does it say why it is there ?

there are yellow ! on each of the ethernet adapters, original and new. The message is that the drivers are missing or corrupt. this is also true of the USB connection I tried.
Do you have any clue what is holding up the installation of these drivers? My next step toward a solution will be to simply install an additional Hard drive and install Windows there using the original hard drive for sdtoreage.
Thanks,
Jerry D.

remove the new ethernet adapter you added and reboot, then remove all devices with yellow exclamation marks in device manager(right click & select uninstall) then reboot again and Win should redetect everything

install Windows to a spare Hard drive then using the original hard drive for storage.

no because we want to fix this

Let me repeat.

Uninstall, reinstall, boot, reboot, enable disable. Whatever procedure. Windows DOES detect the card but REFUSES to load the drivers displaying the message that the drivers are either missing or corrupt, whether I use the cd installation or not.
Thanks,
