Few Linux Questions

I have a few more questions in Linux.

  1. I can use the scroll roll on my mouse to scroll up and down, but when I push it in it doesn’t drag scroll, like in Windows.

  2. In Firefox when I click on the address bar, I’d liek it to highlight all the text so I can just start typing the new address.

I figure these are some settings that need to be changed, but I can’t find where to change them.

Onto DVDs.

  1. How can I just watch a DVD? When I put a DVD in I can click on it to see all the chapters on it, but I can’t figure out how to just watch it straight through.

  2. I’d also like to make back up copies of my DVDs. I do this is Windows with DVD Shrink. How do I do it in Linux?

    Middle-clicking in Linux is a totally different thing than in Windows. In Linux, you have two clipboards instead of one. If you highlight text, it is automatically placed in the first of these clipboards. Middle-clicking pastes the highlighted text. The second of these is identical to Windows, e.g. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, right-click + copy, right-click + paste, etc.

Open the DVD with Xine instead of Mplayer, as it’s much better for DVD playback. In fact, DVDs are the only reason I keep Xine around on my system.

DVD Shrink. :slight_smile: Or there’s also Video-DVDrip, and a bunch more that I haven’t tried.

I urpmi’ed (if that is a word) Xine, and there were like 10 programs. Which do I want?

libxine1 – Xine may not be as good for playing most things as Mplayer, but it’s not bad at all. What it really excels at is playing DVDs, so it’s a must-have if you plan on watching DVDs on your Mandriva box.

xine-ui – Graphical front-end for Xine. Get this if you plan on using Xine.

xine-plugins – Assorted plugins to extend the compatibility of Xine with various multimedia formats.

xine-win32 – Adds support for various Windows codecs to Xine.
