I’ve got a pII 466mhz celeron, 192mb ram, 4gb hdd and I want to use it as a file server. I know it won’t be the fastest thing in the world, but I don’t really mind. I just have one last thing to decide, an OS. It’s currently running win2kpro sp4. Any recommendations for something that’s better? I just need something reliable and easy. Not too concerned about security.

Mandriva 2006, SUSE/OpenSUSE 10, or CentOS 4.2. Very easy, reliable, free, and performs 250% better for Windows file sharing than a Windows server on the same hardware. Plus, if you set them up to be non-GUI they’ll be a lot easier on that 192mb RAM.
All the best,

Just out of curiosity how would you do that? would you set up one partition for the OS and the other as a Windows file system because I know on my rig Windows can’t read off the ReiserFS file system so you couldn’t have one big partition…
(correct me if i’m wrong…)

OK, you’re wrong.
Linux and UNIX systems can share files with Windows by using Samba. The filesystem really has little to do with it. As I said, 250% faster. The primary file server at the last office I set up is a Linux box, and 90% of the client OSes are Windows. Works perfectly.
Ahh okay, thats cool, I was just wondering, now I know… ![]()

Yeah, the basic concept is the same except there are two layers of security instead of one, and for some reason it runs a whole lot faster.
Cool…anything that goes faster is good…well maybe not anything but most things :good:
manrdiva it is
changed system to a 1.0ghz t=bird @1.2ghz, 983mb ram (don’t ask).
will be installing latest version of mandriva on it ![]()
Cool, still got the 4GB HDD in it?
That should be a bit easier on KDE and X with extra RAM.

Wooo, you guys are too much. KDE on a dedicated server

Yea I realise KDE really is a RAM hog after looking at usage. Damn GUI…
yeah OS on 4gb WD Caviar
files and what not on a 160gb seagate
