freezing up problem

Im working on a very old compaq presario that i have installed the linux os on. It boots up, it lets me log on, but then it gets locked up after 5 min of being on no matter if im trying to surf the web or not doing one thing. Please help, thanks.

pentium 2 266 mhz
10Gb maxtor (replaced the origional)
32mb sdram

im guessing a memory shortage? or cpu load, theres a number of explanations..

do you multitask alot?

well i would be… but it dosen’t matter what i try do do on it it always locks up after bout 5 min of being on. lol its getting a bit frustraiting.

i highly doubt it but it sounds like a sasser condition
dont worry man high chance you dont have it

i dont really have a clear answer but wait for other feedback, one of us will definately provide you an answer

ok thx

wait i thought that the sasser was only a windows virus.

It is, thats why he said you don’t have it. It just sounds like a Sasser symptom. But uhhhh, this is just a shot in the dark but what distro/version of Linux are you using?

Its dsl (damn small linux).

Sasser is a Windows virus… there are no known virii in the wild for Linux. Even if there was, infection would not be automatic; you’d have to infect yourself. You’ve been using Windows too long, man. :stuck_out_tongue:

As for the problem, since it’s about the same interval of time between freeze-ups I’d say Linux was trying to utilize ACPI power-saving features of the laptop which were not properly implemented by the manufacturer. I bet that if you disable ACPI the lockups will disapear. Also, make sure power saving features are disabled in the BIOS as well. If that does indeed fix the lockups, I’d suggest recompiling your kernel with only the ACPI functions that your laptop can support properly. That way you get the best of both worlds.

All the best,

Ok thanks ill try recompiling the kernal.

Oh by the way, speaking of power managment, could it possibly be somthing to do with the psu?

It could be, but I doubt it because of the consistency of your freezeups.

its not likely but it could be his cd drive as DSL runs off cd!

It can be installed also. Even so, why would it die after 5 minutes every time?

maybe it is trying to load up something at 5 mins after its loaded!
