Graphics Card, Any ideas?

I currently have a GeForce4 MX 440 graphics card which I want to update. Any ideas which is the best one for around £100. My pc has a Agp 4x can I use a agp 8x card?

Current system

winxp,p4 2.4GH, 768 RAM

cheers

You cannot benefit from the full potential of AGP8x, if your motherboard doesn’t support this (And as you say you have AGP4x I am assuming this is correct).

However all AGP8x graphics cards are backwards compatible, meaning they will still work, but at a culled speed.

You can pick up a radeon 9800 pro for that much, but might I suggest you check out this link - one of the moderators here is selling a 9800PRO for $100, and will ship overseas etc.

Thanks for the reply. So basically its still worth upgrading the graphics card even though my computer only supports agp4x?

well that depends on how much money you want to spend.

Assuming you get a 9800PRO, you will notice a phenomenal difference in performance, and you won’t realise you are missing out on the benefits of AGP8x because you don’t have it. Its kind of hard to explain.

Like if you don’t know what your missing, it doesn’t matter. (thats my attempt at a dodgy analogy but nevermind :P)

You can always get a mobo that has AGP8x support at a later date, and simply wack the card in and it will be at its true power.

cheers for that infor waffle, does all agp4x have a 1.5 volt?

Yeah with hundred pounds you could get a new mobo and the 9800 pro practically.
Mobo
9800 Pro

Oh, and 4x is @ 1.5 volts while 8x is 0.8 volts. A healthy progession.

I am going to buy the Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card but how can i find out if my computer has a 300W power supply which is needed.

cheers

check the side of the PSU shud be a sticker and tells you the power of it
