hard disc retrieval

My old desktop has gone to the graveyard in the sky but the hard disc appears in tact. Is there anyway i can open this and retrieve files on it using my new desktop. the old pc used XP whereas new one has Vista. I bought an external hard drive caddie thinking i could utilise that to retrieve information from the old hard disc but dont seem able to do it. Last thing im basically thick regarding computers (regretfully)

just remove the HDD from your old PC and connect it temporarily to your new system

BTW: the HDD looks like this:

you need to discover the interface the HDD is using, but, its probably IDE & you probably have a spare IDE port, you will probably need to change the device from master to slave or CS (Cable Select)

BTW: you only move a small jumper on the HDD (if IDE) then when its connected to your new system you will have to tell Vista you have added another HDD and copy / move the data to your new system

everyone has to learn, we aren’t born knowing stuff about computers

BTW: personally i use linux & have never used Vista
