Hard disk failure?

Hi,

Frequently when I am working, my hard disk makes a click noise as if it is powering up/down. The system hangs for a bit and will sometimes recover. After restarting the computer after these events, my hard drive sometimes doesn’t get detected by the computer. Is this a sign of hard drive failure? Could it be my power supply? Thanks for any help.

Hi mate,

Sounds to me like your hard drive could be on its way out, but before you put your hand in you pocket ive got a few things you can try.

first off all on one the occasions it does start up back up all your data

  1. Check all the connections on the harddrive to make sure theres nothing loose

  2. find out the hard drive manufacturor and download some diagnostic software from there website (if available) or get 3rd party diagnostic software.

  3. replace the IDE cable if you have a spare one just in case one of the wires are damaged

  4. reformat the harddrive incase of a software problem

Try these if you haven’t already mate

post back after n ill see if i can think of anything else if you still haven’t cracked it!

Hope this helps Dave

Hello there

Before you made some risky action. Here are some advice of mine to you
Have you tried checking chords of your power supply if it is inposition that could attached your hard disk. For me you have a guess that one of the possible cause is your power supply.

something to try: the HDD power cable could be loose or the molex connector (HDD power cable) could be worn / faulty, so connect your HDD to another power connector

BTW: it is unlikely to be the PSU, a clicking HDD usually mean “backup” now

check the HDD power cable
