My friend needs some new parts for his computer. He has bassically the same computer I do. He is going to keep his 200 gb ATA hard drive, Corsair XMS DDR400 2-2-2-5 and his DVD burner.
If he’s serious on Overclocking then a DFI Motherboard would be good, although do they work with Opterons?
Also what Graphics Card will be being used, and what is this system for, it can’t just be for overclocking, yes he may want to overclock the system but to just overclock it and let it sit there is pointless…hehe
They do using the nf3 chipset DFI | Embedded Motherboard | Industrial Computer
Try and find that, it’s because Newegg don’t sell it that you think DFI don’t make them, they may not make them anymore I don’t know but you mya be able to pick one up second hand.
I’m not sure where you’ve been but the only differance between a socket 939 Opteron Venus core and a socket 939 Athlon 64 San Diego core is that the name on the box and that the Opteron overclocks better, so, yes it is DEFFINANTLY an overclocker, many people have gotten it to 2.9 GHz on stock cooling and a very minor voltage increase.

Hes got a 6800 GT AGP and DFI doesnt make socket 939 AGP baords ;).

Actually, yes they do. The LanParty NF3 Ultra-D is around, but I hear they’ve had some issues due to the availability of the nForce 3 250GB chipset.
However, if you’re serious about overclocking on the 939 platform, the MSI K8N Neo2 line (make sure it’s a Neo2, the regular Neo is Socket 754) is probably your best bet. Gigabyte makes some very solid boards with tons of features, but if you’re into anything but light overclocking, then Gigabyte is really not your best bet. Outside of going for a PCIe nForce 4 Ultra motherboard, I’d certainly lean toward MSI over Gigabyte.
You also may have better luck in finding the Abit AV8, which should be a pretty good overclocker, given Abit’s position on overclocking.
I couldn’t find the MSI board mentioned, i was looking for that originally to tell you the truth. The ASUS board I also considered, but it wasn’t and NForce 3 Chipset. That EPoX board I linked apears to be good and has alot of options, whjats your take on that?
