I/O activity freezes windows

Well the first think im going to say is that i know that win98 is old but im going to be running it for a litttle bit on a older machine for server redundancy durning the time my linux box is being upgraded/reinstalled. i dont want to put linux on the machine becuse i still run some windows only things on it

so to get to the problem, its not all the time but very often when i try to install a program from a .exe the computer just freezes up, no mouse the clock doesnt change and ctrl+alt+del dosent work i have to hold the power button down. this all so happens when trying to download files with Internet Explorer 6 they download fine but when it tries to move the file from the temp fold into the desktop it happens. the 2 most needed program are trillian (multi protocal IM) amd firefox. Firefox gets to the installing english language pack and trillian faili right after the directory creation.

i have used win98 for a long time before on this machine but i wanted to reinstall to a new single disco so that all th server files could be on the as disc at the OS, so i had to reinstall. now i dont know what i do i tried win2k pro and that worked fine but i dont want to use that becuase it is to heavy for this machine.

im completly lost on how ot fix this problem i tried to search google for “win98 file transfer freezes” but this shows error on FTP or other programs like that

Try Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool and also look how much memory is being allocated for pagefile..

im not sure what one to get… i would of just happened to missplaced my ubuntu disc with memtest on it :frowning:

Cant you use that latest memory test 86+ because i think ubuntu provides the old version of it…

i was going to use the newest but i dont know what one the iso/exe/ or other ones

to add on when i use utorrent or IDM (internet download manger) the downloads are fine just installing it so maybe its somthing to to must activity?

i did the memtest and ran it on 5 passes no error the sticks are under 6 months old (2 sticks)

im thinking its a disc problem but its a brand new disc just put my win98 on it so hopefully not. when i use the download mangers the files seem not to finish, they say complete but a restart reveals that they are at ~95% done.

also the machine freezes durning unraring

Im just going to install win2kpro the server should run the same if not more stable durning upgrade
