Hi i just bought all the hardware for my new pc. parts are:
Antec Sonata II
AMD athlon64 X2 4200+
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
Hynix 2x 1GB DDR400
Sapphire X1800GTO
320GB SATA HDD
Samsung DVDwriter
The problem i am having is that as soon as i plug the power lead in the fans start and the hdd led and the power led light up.
also both led’s on the vga card light up one says ext pwr(im guessing its indicating that the power is conected to the card) and the other says error(im guessing thats got something to do with it not working).
I have rechecked all the front panal plugs thing that may have been the problem. but made no difference. i pluged the power in with all the front panel plugs out and it still did the same thing.
i noticed in the manual for the motherboard that it said that it dosent support 128mb chips or 16x dimms.the dimms i have are both 128mb and have 16 chips on each one. i asked the store that i bought all the parts from and the guy said that he had personaly installed 16 chip dimms onto the same board and had no problems.

dont believe everything anybody tells you, the fact is he got a sale, but assuming he’s right, it soung like your grafx card may not be seated correctly
remove the grfx card and reinsert it

yes, the power switch located at the front of the system actually plugs onto the mobo

I have done that and it still has the same problems.
i get no beeps but i dont beleive its even doing a post.
I have set it up outside of the case at the moment, as was recomended as a test on the asus site, and am still getting the same problem.
i am begining to think that the power supply is either faulty or insuficiat as its only 450w and the recomeded for the mb is 500.
i tryed testing the rails on the psu, but it dosent seem to work unless its pluged into the board, as the fan will not go and there is no +12 on the molex plugs but there is when conected to the board.
That, and wattage really doesn’t mean much. There’s some 450W that I’d use instead of certain 600W units.
You’ll only get a reading if the power supply is on, and while you can short it out to work, that’s not going to give you much if you’re not testing it with what you’ve got. Tolerances of the 12V, 3.3V, and 5V rails are within +/- 5%.
If you’re video card has a power connector on it, you’ll need to plug that in. If your power supply doesn’t have one, then you should be able to get ahold of one if it didn’t come with your video card or motherboard.
If I understand the situation correctly, the fans are spinning up, but you’re not getting any beeps, correct? If that’s the case, it certainly points to an underpowered PSU. Antec, Enermax, FSP Group (Fortron and Sparkle brands), OCZ, Hiper, Tagan, and if you really have a fat wad of cash, PC Power & Cooling, will do the job. Get something from them with a 480W or higher rating and that should do the job just fine. These aren’t the cheapest units, but with the power requirements of systems these days, it’s a bad move to skimp here.
A 500W unit that runs $80-100 (USD) is probably going to be on the low-end of what you want to spend. There are some good units under this price, but you do need to be careful. The Antec TruePower TPII 550, Enermax EG565P, Tagan TG-480-U22, OCZ PowerStream 520, Hiper’s 580W, and Fortron Blue Storm 500/AX-500 are some of the better units that are easy to find internationally.

thanks for that. the psu in it at the moment is a antec smartpower 450w. 30A +5v, 32A +3.3v, 15A +12v1, 17A +12v2, it does have the PCI-E lead and the atx12 4pin one aswell both of witch are connected.
yea you are right the fans are spinning and no beeps and the monitor isent coming out of standby either. the hdd spins up. but all of this happens as soon as i connect power and turn the psu on i havent touched the front power switch. holding the front switch for 5 sec doesnt turn the comp off eitherit just does nothing.
the hdd and power led on the front are also going. also the power led on the mother board and the 2 red leds on the gpu card.
i have put it all back together now and still the same result.
im just hoping its not something i have done its already cost me AU$2800 im just wishing i spent the extra $50 and got the store to assemble it for me cause then i would of got a warrenty aswell.
