In Built Card reader, usb, fire wire and sound

Hi,

Im trying to install a card reader in a 5.25" slot,

The card reader seems to have three cables (other than the molex) coming off it -

  • A nine connector cable (sound fairly obviously) - is this worth connecting up as i will only need it infrequently and probably do without.

  • A USB Male connector (also included is an adaptor of female USB to x connectors) - I take it this can connect to either an internal USB port or to the USB 2.0 Header USB45,Blue

  • The third connector i assume is the firewire or IEEE1394 port, to what does this connect to? Looking at the Mobo the only likely places are the USB 2.0 Header USB67,Blue or the System Panel Header.

Any Advice on this before i wreck everything would be a great help

The Firewire cable is most likely a pass through, is there by any chance a Firewire port on the card reader?

The USB cable will be the one thats most likely connected up to all the card readers…

connect it to an internal USB port if possible, means the pin headers on the motherboard are spare to add extra brackets with!

Sorry probably wasnt clear,

Comp currently has 2 front usb ports,

Card reader has all cards (12 in one jobby), 3 USB ports, 1 Firewire port and a load of sound jacks (front, side, mic etc)

Dont mind losing the existing ports if i am able to run the card reader, USBs and fire wire - sound doesnt really matter but would be nice

i think it was me that wasn’t clear :stuck_out_tongue:

One Firewire cable comes out of the back of the drive and there is only one firewire port on the front of the drive, i would guess that there is nothing but wire between the two (if you dont plug the firewire cable coming out of the back of the box, then all you will loose it the firewire port on the front).

The USB cable coming out of the back of the box is most likely linked up to everything on the front (apart from the audio jacks and firewire), if possible plug this into a USB port INSIDE the computer (PCI USB expansion cards frequently have these)… if you cant do this you will have to connect it up to the pin header (“USB45,blue”) on your motherboard.

Im guessing the “nine connector cable” is for your audio? i have never heard it referred to as such before though… (and google / google images / wikipedia gave me nothing).

That clearer thanks, but what does the firewire cable connect to will i need a pci card for this or will it connect straight to the Mobo

Depends on your mobo, but like i was saying, i suspect that the only functionality you will lose if you don’t plug it in is the firewire connector on the front.

if your mobo doesnt have the pin headers for firewire, and you want / need firewire, then you will have to buy expansion card.
