strapped for cash, but in need of a computer, purchased a refurb and it worked well for 2 days before going bang (more like a loud clap). removed psu and refitted what the shop man described as a perfectly suitable new psu. power now restored and running but there is nothing coming on my moniter at all, tried a second monitor with same outcome, just switches itself off (both monitors work with old pc). im the first to admit i have no clue about the inner workings of a pc and could really do with some advice on this one as i rely on my pc for my income.
I am sad to say - welcome to the broken PSU club…
It sounds like your PSU decided to take something with it when it went…
A very normal ocurance…
Now it is a bit of a Sherlock game. When this happened to me, only the motherboard went but it is possible that more components have been effected.
At least you have a working PSU so you know this part is OK.
Now all other components need to be checked. It is down to whether you are confident to ‘look under the bonet’ or not. If you are you will need to do a bit of a study to learn how to open and dismental parts of your PC. My burned out mobo had proper burned patches on it which was a dead give away.
If you are not comfortable with the concept of tinkering with the computer, you will need to find someone who can help. Perhaps the shop which sold it to you in the first place. Surely your cover should extend more than two days (unless you bought it in Oxfam… )
If you wish to learn how to do stuff yourself post back and I am sure you will find plenty help here…
If he istalled it and it dont work then he needs to fix it.
If you take it to your local pc shop you can get them to send it to a test centre and they will tell you what went wrong.
you say that your screen dosnt work. Are you using an onboard graphics card( the screen will connect to the computer on the same pannel as the mouse and keyboard ) or do you have a plug in one ( screen connects onto another pannel below the motherboard ). I ask cuz your graphics card could have gone up with your PSU

It has an onboard graphic card, I have looked all over the motherboard and have found no singe marks and there is no burnt smell. I installed the psu myself by following the exact way I took the broken one out.
I really dont have a clue!
Thats fine everyone has to start at a point and get more knowledgeable as thay go.
Have you got a reliable computer shop around your area because they will be able to advise you as they coa see the mobo(motherboard) and if they cant say for sure they can send it away for a comprehensive test.
If you have ensurance then the computer shop will be able to tell you whats up and how much it will cost. that is the only thing i can sugest cuz when my mobo bust it has no singes or an visible sighn of damage but it was broken
I would not go that far… you did replace the PSU didn’t you?
There is no doubt that at least one of your components have been damaged in the clap. The immediate part which comes to mind is the mobo.
However, being such an essential part of the system it is very hard to just quickly get another board put it in the case with the other parts and check.
What you need to start of with is check whether the system POSTs (either good or bad) but does it POST? When a system starts it normaly gives off a beep. If it beeps once it normally signals that everything is OK and then it starts loading the OS. If the system has a problem with one of it’s compopnents it will beep more than once with all sorts of wonderful combinations resembling the good ol’ morse code. And before you ask, no, it does not beep the SOS… As each motherboard has its own signaling system, these combinations can be decyphered using the motherboard manual. Since you have not got the manual, just post whether you are getting any beeps and if you do what is it you can hear.

Post back with the results…
Good luck.

When i tried to boot up there was the one beep then some quiet whirring as normal, all seemed well until nothing came up on the screen and it turned itself off.
I know this may be a long shot but have you checked the pins in the plug tha connects to the mobo. Cuz ive had to fix a pc wit the same problem and i went for hours before i checked the pins and one was bent.
I know it would have to be one hell of a coincidence but hey its worth a shot
