Kubuntu and Intel graphics

Hi, i got Kubuntu installed on my old celeron system with 1.2ghz celeron s, 384mb ram and Intel 810Mobo, i have Kubuntu 6.06 dapper drake installed, and i cant change the resolution above 1024 x 768, is the because the graphics drivers are not installed?

Are you sure that your gfx and monitor can do more then 1024x768? Usually Kubuntu will set the resolution to the highest available.

Type:

glxinfo

And post the output here

Right, well you don’t have 3D acceleration for some reason. Which Intel graphics chipset do you have?

Also, in Konqueror’s address bar, type:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Copy and paste the text here

ok, here is the results:

[code]# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using

values from the debconf database.

Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.

(Type “man /etc/X11/xorg.conf” at the shell prompt.)

This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades only

if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg

package.

If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated

again, run the following command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Oh, on your making the msot of Kubuntu guide, on the bit about adding repos or something in first post, i did that, and got all this:

I have put it because its saying X error, and X is something to do with effects or graphics right? so maybe this could be a problem too.

X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166 Major opcode: 144 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 Failed to open device X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166 Major opcode: 144 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 Failed to open device X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166 Major opcode: 144 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 Failed to open device X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166 Major opcode: 144 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 Failed to open device Creating link /root/socket-will-desktop. The two problems you present are unrelated. The reason you are getting the bottom error is because you are trying to launch a graphical program from the terminal as root. You can’t launch graphic programs from the terminal as root.

Can you post the output of this command:

ls /etc/X11/

Ok
It just comes up with no such file or directory, or command not found, i dunno if i typed it wrong, is it ls /etc/X11/ ? if so, it dont work.

also, is there a damnd virtual keyboard in Kubuntu, i cant find one, but i would like one, coz at moment my dad is using the keyboard on the pentium 4 rig, and untill i get my G15, i only have 2 keyboards for 3 computers :frowning:

Try again.

Highlight the code, then in the terminal you can paste by clicking both mouse keys at the same time.

Silly me, forgot about copying and pasting :stuck_out_tongue:

/etc/X11/:
app-defaults default-display-manager X xorg.conf Xsession.d
config fonts xinit Xresources Xsession.options
cursors rgb.txt xkb Xsession Xwrapper.config

I was hoping you would have a backup xorg.conf, but you do not. I can’t see a reason why you would not have direct rending. Your xorg.conf looks fine.

Anyway, if you want to change your resolution, do the following:

kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Scroll down till you see:

SubSection "Display" Depth 1 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 4 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection

And add the resolution you want next to “1024x768”.

Here’s an example:

SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection

Ok, cheers, also, i will want the graphics drivers to work, so i can at least play some games.

root@will-desktop:/home/will# kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Xlib: connection to “:0.0” refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

kdesu: cannot connect to X server :0.0
root@will-desktop:/home/will#

edit Ah it worked when i did it when i was not root, but all those errors…, that i put in earlier, a little worrying :frowning:

Got 1280x1024 res working now though :good: cheers dude, working.

but still, when i ran that command to launch the Xorg.conf file came up with loads of errors, like i said, i put them in a code box in an earlier post.

I get those errors too. It’s normal.

I don’t know why 3D acceleration isn’t working for you. I’ve looked at your xorg.conf file and everything looks fine. I am using the same ‘i810’ graphics driver as you for my Intel graphics and 3D accelaration worked out of the box.

Maybe someone else will have an answer for you. If not, post on the Ubuntu Forums

Yea, i will give it a try, i tried the command

glxinfo | grep rendering

and it comes up with:

direct rendering: No

~~Edit**

Also, i looked on adept for i810, and it came up with the display drivers, says there installed, so something is stopping direct rendering from been enabled :\
