I’m tryin to playback a .mp4 video file but I don’t have the codecs for it. I downloaded the AAC codecs which I read have support for mp4 as well from here but when I try to compile them I get a few errors:

Anyone know how to fix this or use an alternative method for gaining mp4 playback?

Is that Faad you are trying to install? Why do you have the desire to compile everything when there are packages available? :slight_smile:

Have you install the libxine-extra codecs and win32codecs-all packages?

EDIT: Have you tried playing it in MPlayer? Xine is pants :slight_smile:

Where can I find the libxine-extra codecs, I googled for 'em and I dont see much comin up. And I’m not seeing an rpm package on Mplayer’s site for mandriva, just these:

This is what happens when I open the mp4 file in mplayer:

MPEG-4 audio is aac, MPEG-4 video is divx and quicktime. Is this a quicktime file? Having the faac libraries will not help with the video. I understand that mplayer supports quicktime and divx by default. See here. *.mp4 files are usually quicktime.

It’s a music video I acquired so I don’t know if its quicktime or not..

do you have the xine libraries installed? That should give you playback for that file unless it has the wrong extension. It is possible that the file is windows media and you will need the win32 codecs for that.

I’m pretty sure I’ve installed the win32 codecs since I can play wmv files, etc. How do I check to see if the xine libraries are installed?

EDIT these are the packages I have installed containing “xine”:

Do you have everything here installed?

kenji san is right, you need your PLF Free and PLF Non-Free repos setup. Then you can install it right from your package manager; no need to download & install Windows style. :slight_smile:

I’m now getting this error, but I can play wmv and other files just fine in mplayer.

Hmm it turns out it was doing that because it was an incomplete torrent file, but it was around 95% complete, so I thought if I can open incomplete videos in windows it’d work in linux, guess not.
