It has been some time since I have built one (and never had this issue before) and i have been using a laptop for some time.
So I forked out some money for all the parts, it arrived yesterday, I set it all up and nothing but the CPU and PSU fan will spin (for about a second).
That is with minimal components (CPU, PSU, MOBO) or others plugged in, the result is the same.
At this stage I feared I might have killed the CPU, as the default heatsink and fan is a real pain in the neck to install without destroying everything else in the process (at least from my experience), so I have ordered another one to test…
But I fear I may be wrong that it is the problem, so I am seeking assistance in what others think would be the most likely causes.
So assuming just PSU, CPU and MOBO with only CPU and PSU fans spinning up for about a second, what could be wrong?
None of the components look like they are damaged.
It is a LGA 775 socket board, cpu (2.5g Dual Core) and a 585W Gigabyte PSU.
Any help is greatly appreciated (god I hope it’s the cpu… lol).
hi, what motherboard is it?, I take it it’s got intergrated graphics? when you say your cpu and psu fan spins for a second, do you mean it then shuts off ? if so it could possibly be shorts, check to see if the motherboard isn’t touchin the back of the case, if it still does it build it outside of the case on some cardboard. also rule out your power switch by shorting the two power switch pins on the control panel on the motherboard. if no luck, your looking at motherboard issues, could possibly be bios.

It is an ECS (DDR3 LGA775) motherboard (ATX).
I have ordered new CPU and Motherboard just to make sure, so nothing goes frying again.
I doubt at this stage that it is the power supply, it seems to be supplying power in some fashion, connection internal and external look fine, nothing looks burn out or busted etc.
It’s not intergrated graphics, I have a card, but I was trying to get it to do something without having most of it plugged in (bare minimum), but even with the card in the result was the same.
I ordered an Asus board this time, see how it goes.
make sure you’re not using the pci-e powerleads for the 5v cpu rail. major oversight in designing these plugs as they both can connect each other easilly
if you’ve checked that out and there’s no beep codes try using 1 stick of ram at a time if u havent already.
thirdly, is your psu powerfull enough?
