Well, my router/modem has malfunctioned (apparent overheating according to tech support) so it will have to be returned and replaced, so no Linux for a while, grrrrrr!
So, I’m back to using my old SpeedTouch 330 in XP (glad I kept it!), The thing is that I cannot auto connect to the Internet & or my mail server. I have to start a connection via my Vigin.net desktop icon - then everthing works fine!
It’s been a long time since I exclusively used XP with the SpeedTouch 330, but I remember, rightly or wrongly, that connection to the Internet & or my mail server was automatic, i.e., I just clicked on my web browser and or mail server icon and I connected so as to surf the Net or send and receive mail respectfully.
No big deal having to manually start a connection, but I’m sure I never had to do this before. Any ideas?
Well, after playing around with network settings things are working automatically again - although I’m not really convinced I have actually changed anything!
I can now auto connect to mail server (Thunderbird) and Firefox in XP using the ST 330. I can’t directly connect to Opera in XP through using the ST 330 - I have to connect to Virgin.net first.
However, that is really a debatable point, as I was using the router/modem in XP, which connected to any browser or mail server automatically, so I never used the ST 330 to try to connect to Opera in XP.
Sent the router/modem back under warranty this morning, so hope it won’t be long before they send a replacement - then it’s back to Linux!!
I’ve only been back using XP for less than 24 hours and have already had a system crash! Windows can sometimes try your patience…
my setups different cos, i go a VoIP adapter (not working) connected to a second net card, to connect auto i think i just directed it to the correct net card
