No POST, computer stutters

Hey all,

I’m building a new PC and have been having trouble getting a post screen. First, I got none at all. Then, I thought my cpu fan might have been shorting the mobo to the case, so I took it off. Now when I turn the pc on, my monitor picks up a signal, there’s one beep, and then the whole pc shuts down. I don’t know what this beep code means (my mobo manual doesnt list them). Can anyone help? I don’t think it’s my power supply, its brand new and the 550 watts should be more than enough. Also, I doubt the processor is over heating since it only runs for ~4 sec (not enough time to get hot). If you need more detailed specs, let me know.

Thanks

UPDATE

there is a post screen, it checks stuff, and then says “bad cmos checksum - defaults loaded” then it cuts power. Sometimes it seems to stay on longer than normal, but never more then 10-15 seconds…

whats the make & model off your PSU (wattage doesnt mean much, check out B’s PSU sticky)

dont be to sure, although its probably the PSU

you CMOS battery is probably dead

thanks for the reply donkey!

my psu is an “ULTRA V Series ATX”

and for the cmos battery…it looks like a watch battery. Can I just go buy a replacement in the grocery store for $3? Or do the two batteries just look similar? Where would be the best place to get a replacement?

umm… I don’t think its the psu. I put in another psu that I’m 99.9% sure is working fine and I had the exact same thing happen. I’m pretty sure that donkey was right when he suggested cmos battery.

IT WORKS!!!

it was a combination of the old cpu fan shotring the processor to the case, and the cmos battery was bad. Thanks donkey!

sorry, i lost your post, glad you sorted it though
