Well, it’s goodbye to Windows for me - at least for the foreseeable future. My XP Home Edition CD, that I bought cheap off ebay yonks ago has gone belly-up (or so I think).
I loaded XP on it a couple of times but the installations were never that ‘clean’, as the PC would often reboot during setup - I mean during the middle of installing files, drivers, etc - as opposed to the normal sequence of restarts that take place during installation.
Oh, I would add that the CD seems legitimate as far as Microsoft were concerned - the COA key registered and was authenticated and the disk passed all the hologram comparison checks on the Microsoft website. I just think it was a ‘second’ as far as quality is concerned.
Tried to reload the XP a couple of weeks ago, but the same thing, only worse, and this time accompanied by BSOD by the shed load!
Finally, decided to install Mandriva on my primary drive and Ubuntu on the secondary. They both installed flawlessly - no problems - and what a smashing distro Ubuntu is - very slick! Everything is working perfectly on both distros - so, happy days!!
