NOISES NOISES NOISES...damned noises

Hello,

Does anyone have any ideas what can make a low pitch scratch like sound when i’m on the windows desktop or some other application and when i start playing the sound’s pitch go higher, but not always, it seems to be more constant when old graphics are involved… i was playing the first Halo and it was making noises like crazy, but when i play something newer like Spaceforce it becomes intermitent. It seems that the noises are coming from the upper part of the case… where the cpu, psu, memorys and dvd are located. Flopy, hd and vcard are on lower bays so i don’t belive it’s coming from any of them…

I have a:

k8v-x
athlon 3000+ 2ghz
sata seagate 80gb
nvidia 6800 extreme
coletek 500w psu
sms stabilizer

working without any oc, actualy i tryed to underclock to see if the noises improves, without luck… :wink:

I had a problem several months ago where all my usb ports went bad, a lot of blue screen of death (“irq not equal or less”) AND THE DAMNED NOISES. At that time i disovered that the psu was fryed and had the psu replaced for this tougher one and it was fine until now…

anyones has any thoughts on this?? Thanks !!

well we need to start eliminating stuff, first remove your system lid and try to listen for the location of the noise & make sure nothing is touching any of the fans & make sure all the fans are clean and dust free, also while messing inside your system, if you don’t have an anti static wrist strap just touch an exposed metal part of your case to earth yourself, if the noise is coming from the CPU fan you’ll need to remove it with your system turned off, it may be difficult to remove because there is probably thermal paste applied to it, clean off all the old thermal paste with some Isopropal Alcohol, it cheap and available from any chemist or pharmacy, you’ll also need some more thermal paste but only apply a paper thin layer cos too much thermal paste actually has the opposite effect, instead of helping to transfer heat away from the processor it act as an insulator
