Im making a gaming pc this christmas and thinking of overclocking it. Just wondering how many fans would I need? and can anything other than fans be bought that increase the performance of certain pc parts

How far can the new intel 2.4ghz conroe core be overclocked with the right cooling? Also can anyone point me in the right direction for some nice coolers.
Core 2’s have been known to go past 3GHz quite frequently. At stock voltage and stock cooling.
I know this is gonna sound stupid but could you explain to me what you mean by “stock” as im a complete novice. I think it means something like as its bought, like straight from the shop with no mods but not completely sure
Stock voltage is the voltage that Intel has concluded is what is necessary for that CPU to run at without issue. The stock cooler would be what comes with a retail boxed processor.
so if i were to buy a cooler that was huge or even buy a water cooler, how far can you estimate that I would be able to overclock
stock means: standard cooler (that came with the CPU when you brught it)
I’ve seen stronger cooling have these suckers at 3.8GHz. However, do realize that this isn’t a guarantee that you’ll get a higher OC. Still, the odds are pretty good you’ll have a very healthy OC.
Since it’s on my mind now, I’ll mention it. When people say they’ve hit a certain speed that’s stable, that doesn’t mean that they’ve gotten into Windows. It generally means they’ve tested it. Testing typically involves running the blend test on [google]Prime 95[/google] for 24 hours without error. [google]Stress Prime[/google] is a repackaged variant, and is a little easier to use. I haven’t used it, but I’ve been hearing that [google]Orthos[/google] is even more brutal, and is multithreading by default—good for dual core CPU’s like the Core 2 Duo.
so do you think I could get around 3.2ghz safely? and with what kind of cooler, air or water?
Air, and from what I’ve been reading, you can probably do it with the stock cooler. If you were aiming for, say, 4GHz, then you’d want to look into water.

Those are pretty good coolers. I just got the Athlon64 variant, and it’s a great cooler. Arctic Cooling seems to have some good coolers without costing $50 for the heatsink. I know a few other people with Arctic Cooling Freezers around here really like them.
