pc keeps turning off

hello there

my pc kepts turning its self off

buts it just powers off like the electricity has gone its doent shut down or restart or anything

the only way to get it back on is to unplug the power from the mothrboard and it will boot up ok

i have cleaned out my fan and heatsink and my graphics cards to see if that was cuasing overheating but its still doing it

it could still be overheating but i dont know how to tell if it is or wether it would just switch off like that with no warning

any ideas thanksn

I need some more information from you before I can even attempt to troubleshoot.

What is the specifications of the computer?
What is the specifications of the power supply?
Did you build the computer yourself?
Have you upgraded any hardware recently / added anything new to the computer?

amd 2600 seprom
512 ram
radeon 9600pro graphics
80 gig hdd
120 gig hdd
psu is 500w with 3 fans

i ahve added some stuff my self but not recently its had this setup for about a year without any problems

i mean it not really high spec pc so this psu shold power it and has for a while

Well, pure wattage doesn’t mean much, as that can be true, but still not have the voltage in the right spots. What specific make and model of PSU do you have?

Next, what temperatures are you getting for your CPU?
When does it shut off? Randomly, after a specific amount of time, and/or intense usage (ie, gaming)?

also look at ur event viewer(RightClick MyComputer > Manage > Event > Applications/System), double click on all the errors and copy paste here…

my psu is a q tec 550w triple fan thats all i know from the sticker on the side

it turns off randamly sometimes it will stay on for a few hours others 10mins
i dont play games on it i just browse the net do no major tasks

al find out what the cpu temp is in bios and post it up

I dont quite know what to make of all that error report, but it says hardware failure, as i see you have a Q-tec psu, and from other posts, Q-tec seems to be one of the worst makes of PSU, and i would blame the PSU for these shutting down problems, you need to get a new psu, Hiper, antec tagen etc.. are good makes of psu’s, i nearly destroyed my old computer with a crappy psu. Although your computers does not seem to be that power hungry, i would still suggest replacing the PSU, better to be safe than sorry :), it could be a software problem as i seen abit about failing device driver, hopefully someone else may be able to inform you more about the big error report :).

Yep, Q-Tec have a VERY bad reputation. Just ask Big B :slight_smile:

BTW, what USB devices are you running?

Ah, yes. Q-tec. Arguably one of the worst PSU brands out there. Poorly made, poorly assembled, poor quality parts…you’ve got a bad PSU. Get something by Antec, Enermax, OCZ, Fortron/Sparkle/FSP, Tagan, TTGI, Silverstone, Seasonic, or PC Power & Cooling (for the Rolls Royce of PSUs). Any of these brands with a 450-500W+ unit will work just dandy. Just get that garbage out of there if you value your computer at all. These are bad enough units that have given several forum members trouble in the past, as well as with other forums. I would recommend not running the system until you get a new PSU.

I cant see something like that making a computer totally turn off.

If you are talking about my post then below is something which I saw and made me think that it could be the problem but still problem could be anything else…:ohah:

If you are using Double-Take:

  • your source server crashed.
  • during failover, the target server takes over the IP address of the source.
  • the source server boots and claims its own IP address, resulting in an IP conflict, causing this error.
  • the source server gets IP address 0.0.0.0 and is unreachable.
    To prevent this, do not boot the source server until you have performed a failback on the target server. To prevent automatic reboots after a BSOD, go to My Computer → Properties → Advanced → Startup and Recovery → Settings, and disable “Automatically restart”.

I dont know if amds do the same, but intel cpus, turn off the hole system like if there was no power, when they reach a dangerous temperature, so go to the bios and check your cpu temp.

if that is the problem, something may be wrong with your thermal compound, so you have to apply a new one.
