Is there any difference in perfomance between intenal PCI based adapters vs. external USB based adapters, all other things equal?

The USB ethernet card will be significantly slower then a PCI based card.

Transfer rates will be good enough, but the fact that it uses a bit of system resources as its USB. 480mbits should be enough for networking though.

USB data must travel over the PCI buss anyway. You might as well just get a PCI card.
