Please Help Me My Computer Is Driving Me Mad!

HI…i have recently formatted my computer for reasons i wont go into right now, this has been done before with great success…the problem i am having is that since doing this some file sizes of my pictures seem to have taken steroids, ie: now in mb instead of kb… but some have stayed the same, also an antivirus scan is taking twice as long, if i want to divx my home movies to turn them into dvd that too is taking double time…i would have said that my hard drive has copied everything but the disc space is about what it should be…i dont understand much in the way of technical speak so plain english for the novice please, any answer would be greatly received to stop me from smashing the damn thing to bits!!!:ohah:

OH forgot to say i use windows xp pro…

first i would start with a virus scan (with an upto date scanner) failing that i would have to scan for adware & if that is the problem, remove it

Thanks…unfortunately this has been done, done and done again, all offending articles are removed…my computer is whiter than white as i tend to have a little OCD issue going on in that department.

don’t worry about it, your NOT the only 1 to have OCD, me too, i’m not at my best with XP (i much prefer Win9x) perhaps you have more luck with the other guys (cos some (most) are a bit of a lot good, but i will have a think about it & check back later)

Could be a lot of things because you aren’t giving much away. I suggest you optimise your computer and take it from there.

  1. Run the Disk Cleanup Wizard.
  2. Run Disk Defragmentor
  3. Download and install CCleaner. It’s a freeware registry cleaner and also a start up manager. It’s lets you choose which programs you want to start automatically when Windows boots.

Other then that, check what processes are running on your computer and eating up resources. Open the Task Manager and select the processes tab.

sorry but, i seem to remember something about Win3.1 try setting your pageing file (swapfile) to the size of your RAM times 2.5 (if you have 128Mb RAM set your swapfile to 384Mb) if that doesn’t work look for a setting like “display as Kb or Mb” this may not work but knowing my stupid memory, it just might

does the amount of free space relate to the new file sizes or the old file sizes ?
