right, i’ve really lived up to my name with this one, i was using Feisty and i removed hal (Hardware Abstraction Layer:doh: :doh: :doh: , i now know that hal acts as a kind of interface between the hardware & software)

BTW: i also removed network manager & knetwork manager & possibly some other stuff too:doh: :doh: :doh:

now i’d like to fix Feisty, currently i’m running Debi Etch (on another HDD) with Feisty’s partitions mounted as /mnt/hdb*

now i think i need to reinstall the stuff i stupidly removed, however, i don’t know where to put them, but that’s not a problem, as i can find the install locations with google i think

but, where are the system logs in Feisty, i’ve found some logs in /var/log but i’m unable to read them, as they just appear to contain crap as far as i’m concerned

if i deleted ~.kde & reinstalled Feisty, Feisty would be fixed but i would be back on the VESA grfx driver how can i restore Feisty without overwriting all the system stuff

Edit: i’ve being looking for an advanced way to reinstall Feisty, maybe through recovery mode, but i’ve not found anything yet, just like most *nix distos have a cmd line before boot, to enter advanced mode install

Just reinstall the packages using apt-get. If you’ve broken it to a point where you can’t use the package manager, then might as well reinstall.

Anyway, lesson here is not to remove stuff in the first place. The disk space gained isn’t worth it if you’re not sure.

no, can’t, no net access, already tried that, did it a few days ago, being trying to fix myself, i know my limitations, thats why i asked for help

not much point removing stuff to recover disk space, as HDD & partitions can be added[ot]yes i am a plank[/ot]

Edit: Edit: can i extract the missing files from the install CD and place them where they need to be from Debi, then boot kbun
