I get this message when I boot up, before Windows loads…

DUAL CHANNEL OPERATION REQUIRES IDENTICAL PAIRED DIMMA INSTALLED ACROSS BOTH MEMORY CHANNELS

BIOS HAS DETECTED A NON OPTICAL MEMORY CONFIGURATION CAN IMPROVE THE SYSTEM’S MEMORY BUS BANDWIDTH

CHANNEL A, DIMM 0 SHOULD MATCH CHANNEL B, DIMM 0

CHANNEL A, DIMM 1 SHOULD MATCH CHANNEL B, DIMM 1

CMOS/GPNV CHECKSUM BAD

Hmm… Now I thought all my memory was the same kind. I think some might be PC2100 and some PC3200. There are two 256s and 1 512.

Any ideas?

it might be because you dont have them installed in the right place, depending on your motherboard there could be different ways of setting it up. what are the speeds and sizes of all your modules…exactly

okay that may help but do you have the exact sizes and speeds of you memory for example:
1 stick of DDR266 256MB
2 sticks of DDR400 512MB
etc…that way we can work out how to arrange it to overcome this problem.

You need an identical pair as the error said, you can’t mix up different speeds otherwise dual channel won’t work!
I’m assuming the 512 stick is the PC3200 so id recommened getting another 512MB and discarding the PC2100 stuff (and i dont mean throwing them away).
For dual channel to work you must have RAM in DIMM 1 & 3 or 2 &4 but your motherboard manul will confirm this!

yeah thats what i meant, but some motherboards have it in 1&2 and 3&4…but thats only a small few i think.

My board only has 3 slots and to run it in dual channel mode I have to put a module in slots 1&2 or 2&3 of Identical ram. Right now I have 2 sticks of 512mb in 1&2. I could add another stick but it wouldn’t be in dual mode anymore. Some people prefer more ram than running in dual mode.

Yes, but if you’re talking about the ECS N2U400A, that’s an nForce 2 motherboard, and the memory configuration is a bit different than conventional dual-channel setups.
