Ok reinstalled XP PRO (again), and put it, SP2 and my drivers on a 25gb partition.
Basically I want C:\ to be just Windows and Drivers.
I know that during installation of a new program you can specify where to save it, but is there any way to lock the C:\ to prevent me writing anything to it?
No I don’t think so, not on your windows drive anyway.. Some programs, even though you specify which drive to install, still sometimes install part of it onto your Windows drive. Example photoshop.

ah well, i’ll just max out the disk with my music collection, so nothing will get installed on it by accident.

25gb is too much, you’d be fine with half of that.
Do not max your C: drive because you’re gonna’ have problems.
For instance, if you try to install MSOffice on your D: drive while your C: drive is full, it just won’t install.
Also, your system will start being extremely slow.
And it’s not an accident if things get installed on your c: drive…and it’s not a vendetta either.

I’ve created a whole load of partitions, so hopefully I can keep the games and the music and the photos separate from the system and the drivers.

That’s an excellent way of doing things imo. You’ll never have to worry again (let’s say, much less) about losing your important files.
I suggest making a partition for all your downloads, so you don’t have to waste cds or time redownloading the same programs.
Good idea, I was just wandering what to do with the last 25gigs…
I was gonna turn it in to a page file, but I can get away with a 5gig page file partition.
