Processor Running VERY Hot

Hi All,

I’ve recently purchased and put together the following rig:

Newegg.com - Once You Know, You Newegg

Nvidia Geforce 9800GTX
Intel Core 2 E8400 3.0 GHZ Wolfdale
Seagate 500GB 7200 RPM SATA
Corsair 2 x 2 GB DDR2
610 Watt PSU
Asus NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI mobo
Antec 900 mid-tower
Acer 22’’ Widescreen

Upon initially setting it up, my processor was running at an ungodly temperature of 112c. I turned it off immediately, bought arctic silver 5, turned all the fans on high, and the processor is still running at about 70c in BIOS which still seems unusually high. I know the stock heatsink isn’t the greatest, but will getting a Zalman really be significant enough to drop it 30c?

Any help would be really appreciated… I’m stumped

possibly, but, are you using any thermal compound ?

if not you should only apply a paper thin layer otherwise the thermal compound will act as an insulator, you should ALWAYS use thermal compound

yeah, arctic silver 5 is the thermal paste im using

right, ok, it is still high it should have a max temp of about 60C even with the stock cooler

what RPM are the fan running at try Speedfan, Motherboard Monitor & Hardware sensors

the reason i’ve included 3 temp monitors is: temp monitor software was a bit unreliable, so take the average of all 3

Thanks for the tip. I’ll try that once i get my display working again, hehe. having a possible GPU problem too: http://www.hardwareforums.com/geforce-9800-gtx-no-signal-monitor-23213/

Also on another note, the stock heatsink was very difficult for me to install. I tried re applying it along with paste possibly 3 times now. I think I’m going to just go ahead and get a Zalman

Just for reference I have an e8200 and it’s about 47 while just browsing web and 60C is around the max I have seen it go, on stock cooler.
