hey guys, i have recently been having trouble with my Radeon 9600 XT.
It has been freezing a lot in games and occasionally browsing the net.
My Specs:
P4 2.4Ghz
512MB DDR RAM
Soltek sock478 PCI
Radeon 9600XT 256mb
Windows XP Professional
It is strange in the fact that it is basically only directx9 supported games doing it.
(i have tried the following games: Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2 Special Forces, F.E.A.R, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Source, Age of Empires III and all have resulted in me freezing in less than 5 minutes of gameplay)
It is strange in that i can play The Sims non-stop without freeze. Any Ideas?
I have tried doing the following to fix the problem:
Format
Re-Install Direct X9
run dx diagnostic checks and everything tells me it is fine
unninstall/reinstall video card drivers
install latest radeon driver for this card (5.10 was working for me before this problem so i re-installed that n still problem)
Any other ideas?
I very much doubt it is overheating because it has been playing games fine for about 6 months or so up until now.
It does not really bother me whether i find the problem as i am getting a whole new pc, just wandering what might be causing it out of interest.
funny as it is, i think the 9600 is a kick ass card for what it is, can play anyhting at decent settings.
hmm, that is strange, does the 9600xt have an additional power connector on it?
When did the problem start|?
What was the last thing you were doing on the computer when the problem started?
have you done any overclocking on it at all?
sometimes i can’t even load the game. it gets to the menu and freezes straight up. Running low settings is not good enough.

started maybe 1 month ago
i can’t really remember last thing i did, maybe play battlefield 2 then turned it off and went to bed. next morning started occasional freezes, not it is almost non-stop
No i haven’t overclocked the card
Public my current pc i can change to a lot! lol.
Intel p4 3.6Ghz 64-bit
2 x 1gb DDR2 RAM
GeForce 7800GTX 256mb
Windows XP Pro 64-Bit
ASUS P5ND2-SLi DELUXE nVidia nForce4 SLi Dual GBL Dual Raid SATA300 8 Channel Audio
^^ that is what i will be getting mid january, as u can see i am a PC fanatic and gaming is my life. I want/Need the best.
i would reccomend an AMD 3700+ or 3500+, and a skt 939 motherboard, those cpu’s may only be 2.2ghz, but there cheaper, and play games better than that 3.6ghz pentium 4.
and get some decent DDR 400 pc3200 ram, from ocz, or corsair, or geil
Yeah if you want the Best go with an AMD CPU, SKT 939 SLI Motherboard as a basis, throw in some low latency performance RAM and you’re off to a good start.
If you’re wanting advice on a new computer I’d suggest you make a new thread in the New Build/Upgrade Section.
Seems to be a wonky problem, as the usual fixes don’t work. It could be that there’s an issue with your RAM or that the power supply is starting to go…although based on the oddity, I’m leaning toward the PSU.
