Random Freeze and Reboot

I’ve search a lot and have run many tests, but I can’t figure out why my desktop is randomly rebooting and locking up.

  • I’ve run memtest86+ for an hour.
  • I’ve used FurMark to do a stability test on my GPU. Although, the temperature did reach 103* C ( could that be the issue? ).
  • I’ve used prime95 to check my CPU for heat issues ( it remained steady at 67* C after ten minutes of running prime95 ).
  • I’ve checked my MOBO temp during the prime95 check and it was remaining at a steady 47* C.
  • I’ve monitored my voltages to make sure it wasn’t spiking or dipping.

I did almost all this in one sitting, and the damn thing locked up after I clicked ‘shutdown’

The rig is a homebrew with the current conf:

Windows 7 64-bit
AMD Phenom II x4 965
6.0 GB RAM DDR3 @ 666Mhz (9-9-9-24)
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO
XFX GeForce 8600FT 512MB

Any ideas!?

lockups can be caused by allot of things, Have you scanned for a Virus ? Check the Processor to see if it is seated right.. Also the fan on the processor..
could also be a bad ram chip.. Have you tired another OS ? try a 32 bit instead of 64 … there is just too many things to check, But you will need to narrow it down some how..

Freshly install OS. Bad RAM chip not detected by memtest… There’s only one way to seat a CPU…

If there is a BIOS feature “Spread Spectrum”, disable it. I have an ASRock P4i65G motherboard with Spread Spectrum enabled by default. I experienced random stop errors in Windows XP. After switching Spread Spectrum off the systems works totally fine.

Just sayin’, but I hope you know that those temperatures are way above the normal rates? All your hardware should be somewhere around 25-40 degrees C while idling, 45-55 while being used intensively. But 100 degrees C for your GPU? That’s not normal. I think you need to get better cooling man. 4 out of 5 times random freezes & reboots are caused by overheating.

Did this just start happening? did you change something recently that may be relevant to your issues? Did you just build this machine?
Again have you tried a 32 bit OS instead. Are all your Drivers up to date?

if you dont have access to a windows 32 bit os prehaps you could try an Linux OS and run a stress test see if the same happens
