Does the chkdsk ever finish successfully? What does it say at the very end? Does it say that all files were fixed? Does it show 0 Bad Sectors?
Normally it will keep running until it fixes everything. If there is a number in front of the Bad Sectors I would replace the harddrive while you can still retrieve your info.
