[QUOTE=Sony|BMG]
November 2, 2005 - This Service Pack removes the cloaking technology component that has been recently discussed in a number of articles published regarding the XCP Technology used on SONY BMG content protected CDs. This component is not malicious and does not compromise security. However to alleviate any concerns that users may have about the program posing potential security vulnerabilities, this update has been released to enable users to remove this component from their computers.

If you were to ask me, I’d tell you they were testing their boundaries on how invasive their DRM could become before the public took notice. Sony: we’ve taken notice. We also take notice when you sue children and their parents for file trading, use scare tactics against your own customers, and try to take away our fair use rights for the content that we’ve purchased from you.
Things in perspective, Sony likely won’t need to write a rootkit for Windows ‘Vista’ – it will come heavy-laden with DRM right out of the box.
