After lot of work and several delays, we proudly announce the
availability of SUSE Linux 10.1. In tribute to 42 and as today is the
fifth anniversary of the death of Douglas Adams, we dedicate this
release to him.
It can be downloaded as described below and on download.openSUSE.org – SUSE Linux 10.1 in x86, x86-64, and ppc versions -
both via ftp from our mirrors and bittorrent. We’d appreciate if you
use bittorrent to share the download with others.
Initially we offer as ISOs the 5 CD open source version plus our
add-on CD with proprietary portions, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader,
RealNetworks RealPlayer, and Sun Java Runtime Environment. DVDs will
be available for download from Thursday, May 18.
Additionally two ftp trees are available - one with only open source
packages and one with non open source packages. The open source tree
contains packages build from more than 3100 source RPMs.
As usual, we ship all the latest open source packages available at the
time. But we want to give special mention to Xgl for 3D acceleration
on the desktop (Welcome to openSUSE), NetworkManager for
getting painless wifi access everywhere, the completely open source
AppArmor 2.0, and the full integration of XEN 3 in YaST.
We’d like to thank you all for testing heavily, reporting bugs, giving
feedback on mailing lists, etc., and in general for supporting and
participating in creating SUSE Linux 10.1.
Well to my horror i’ve found out that GNOME is becoming the default GUI in SuSE It seems that some of the popular Linux distributions are looking for a standard and most of them have chosen GNOME! What they are doing is removing choice in the matter. Sure, KDE is included in SuSE 10.1, but most of the attention has gone towards GNOME.
Now theres nothing wrong with GNOME, but KDE is far more powerful. Worse though, is that the defualt GNOME look in SuSE looks horribily like Windows..
I don’t think I want to upgrade anymore? And if I don’t want to upgrade SuSE then perhaps nows the time to look elsewhere
I’ve always stuck with KDE myself, and haven’t really cared for other window managers. I know they’re there, but KDE offers the creature comforts of Windows without being Windows. Gnome is alright, but I just like KDE better.
Gnome may be the default install, but I’d think you’d have the option to have KDE installed instead of Gnome…at least you have a good assortment in SuSe 9.1
I am actually quite annoyed right now. Moving from Windows to Linux was a massive switch and it’s taken me awhile to readjust. Now SuSE has gone to shit and I will probably have to change again.
I think Kubuntu would be the best replacement as I already have a lot of experience with Ubuntu, which is installed on another computer. However for my main computer I need KDE.
I hate the horrible poo coloured theme of GNOME in Ubuntu. It just looks depressing and boring. KDE and its tools are much more powerful, customisable and easier to for the beginner. Ubuntu GNOME menus are illogical.
