thermalright sp94 heatsink question

When installing a thermalright sp94 heatsink is it ok to put a thin layer of arctic silver 5 on the base of the heatsink. Or do you only need the arctic silver on the cpu. Please help if you can.

Thank You

well the way i did it was put a thin layer on the CPu then place the heatsink on top and move around a little bit, to get it into the mirco holes and dents in the heatsink as well, dont put a bit on both otherwise you can end up putting too much on.

Is that something I can do with other after market heatsinks beside the thermalright sp94.

Yes. In fact that’s the proper way to do it. The thermal paste is there to fill in micro-gaps that haven’t been smoothed out. This is why you never, ever want or need to glob it on. This will act as a heat insulator, quite the opposite effect of what we want…
You only need to cover the CPU’s die, or the heatspreader. It’s worthless and probably a bit foolish to put it elsewhere on the CPU packaging.

thanks for the advice.
