trouble with upgrade installation of 7600gs

Hi all,

Recently purchased a Gigabyte 7600gs silent to replace my 5700le on an aging P4 agp system. Basically, when I put in the new card and start I run into a wall on booting into the system. What happens is it goes through a cycle of Windows start up, stops, goes to DOS, and tries again over and over.

I tried F8 and Safe Mode and nothing.

I replaced the card again and all is well, so I’m pretty sure it’s a driver issue. My thinking for a solution would be:

  1. start with 5700le normally
  2. install the 7600 drivers
  3. shut down
  4. put in new card
  5. start up and cross fingers

Now, this just a guess on my part so my basic question is “What might I be doing wrong and how can I correct the problem”.

Hope it’s not a BIOS flash as I have no experience with such things.

Btw - I also replaced the PSU with a new 360watt, PC Power and Cooling unit (the card is rated for 300) and everything’s fine on the power side of things.

Did you remove the 5700 drivers before you switched the cards?

What version of windows are you running?

No! Should I have? I was thinking this also.

I’m running XP Pro on an older Intel MB

and what are you referring to as DOS? are you by any chance confusing it with POST?

I probably am refering to POST. It’s a back screen with boot information.

I’m just worried about not being able to go back to what I had after removing the drivers on the old card.

You know, I just went to Safe Mode without changing anything and the default resolution is 600*800. I’m toast on that low a res since I’m on an LCD.

If I uninstall the Nvidia drivers of my 5700le and put in the Gigabyte 7800gs will it be “smart enough” to default to 1280*1040 without the new drivers?

Of course, I would then put in the new drivers, but my concern is I can’t do so with a low res screen.
