How to install Multimedia Codecs from Ubuntuguide.org

The “ubuntu-restricted-extras” is a meta-package that installs : flashplugin-nonfree, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse, msttcorefonts, sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-plugin. These packages are proprietary to their restricted developers (Adobe, Sun, Microsoft, etc.) You accept the licensing terms of each developer when installing them: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
W32codecs has the Microsoft multimedia codecs (WMV, AVI, etc). By installing it you agree to Microsoft licensing terms.sudo apt-get install w32codecs You may also need other modules:sudo apt-get install libxine-extracodecs gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-pitfdll

BTW: presumably you have an Intel CPU, am i correct ?

but if he breaks the :swear:ing fishing rod by accident, he will be :swear:ed

Just say NO to WMV.

I Did A Copy And Paste Of The Reply Post From Donkey But Had No Luck, I Get This Error: Reading package lists… Done
Building dependency tree… Done
E: Couldn’t find package ubuntu-restricted-extras:(

just install it with the package manager then (Synaptic, Adept or whatever package manager your using)

Edit: just tested the commands & they work

I’m Using Synaptic Package Manager, Now How Do I Use That To Install Those Plugins?

start synaptic with “All” selected on the left & scroll down to "ubuntu-restricted-extras, click box next to it & select “mark for installation” & click “Apply” & it will automatically install

Ok I’ll Try That When I Get Home, Oh By The Way Donkey Please Change Your Sig.. It Nearly Got Me In Trouble With My Boss!:open_mouth:

why ?, what was wrong with it

I Did Just That Except My Synaptic Manager Doesn’t Have “ubuntu-restricted-extras” So What Now?

Nothing Just That He Thought I Was Checking Out One Of Those Adult Sites Because Of The Sexy Chicks On Your Sig, It’s Cool You Can Display It Again, I Like It.

You need to enable the Universe and Multiverse Repositories to be able to install so called ‘restricted’ packages.

Repositories/Ubuntu - Community Help Wiki

ubuntu-restricted-extras has always being there, does Automatix enable multiverse & universe to enable the install of restricted packages ?

I believe it does, it would make sense anyway (aka it tries to install as many packages from apt as possible so that they are updated automatically)

X slash X are you running Feisty Fawn? The Ubuntu restriced extras package is not available in Dapper or Edgy so you would have to install the codec packages manually if you are using those versions.

I Don’t Think So, I Baught A PC Format Mag With Ububtu 7 Feisty Fawn But The Damn Disk Is Faulty So I’l Hav To Buy The Mag Again. (Im Using Ubuntu 5 So Maybe Thats Why Im Having So Many Problems Trying To Install Some Packages)

download it from here, or if your not on broadband some HWF users will send Linux discs in the mail PM Impy cos i think he does it (can’t find anything about it)

http://www.hardwareforums.com/x86-amd64-ppc-k-x-ed-ubuntu-discs-mailed-you-free-12938/

The list of disks that i have is out of date, i will download and send any disk free of charge (and at the moment i have plenty of blank cds/dvds so i won’t ask you to send me blank disks!)

By Sending These Disks Do You Actually Send Them By Post???
Hehehe Im All The Way In S.A Dude Although I Would Like To See You Succeed In Doing So:D

yeah

their should be no problem, however, i think you need to pay the postage charges to Impy, PM him, & i would have thought you can probably pay with Paypal

Edit:  thanks Impy, i couldn’t find it, bookmarked now, there for life - thanks to foxmarks
