is kubuntu just ubuntu with KDE, i know by default ubuntu come with gnome but if you were using KDE on ubuntu (with gnome removed) would it then be kunbutu ?
Yes, basicially it would be kubuntu. You can turn ubuntu into kubuntu or xubuntu very easily. I don’t know why they just didn’t make 1 ubuntu with gnome, kde and xfce included. Ubuntu is stupid like that.

Yep, but including KDE requires that you include the KDE tools as well, like Kontact etc, which coupled with the packages for Ubuntu and XFCE wouldn’t fit in a single CD which is what they try and do.
so on that basis, ubuntu should be called Gubuntu, correct ?

no, G = gnome, as gnome is the default WM (i think) in ubuntu
