I recently combined 2 PC’s into one..Basically I had a MOBO problem in one and I took the hard drive out of that and installed it in my other computer..and after a few tweaks everything works great..EXCEPT! one thing..the computer that I took the hard drive out of also had an sd card reader and a cf microdrive along with a usb port all in one unit.
So I disconnected it,and installed it in the new 2 hard drive computer.
Now the sd reader and the microdrive all are recognized by the “new” computer and work just fine, but when I plug anything into the USB port, the computer completely freezes..no mouse movement, ctrl alt del doesnt work,nothing..Ive checked Device Manager for errors and none show up,there is however one USB controller that shows up without the option to Enable/disable.
Thanks for any help you can provide
well there a few known problems that cause this problem
and antivirus and norton ghost are 2 culprips, i think (if my stupid memory isn’t playing tricks on me) MS released an update to fix this, assuming your using a Windows flavour, are you ?
if so which one ?
while i’m searching for the update i mentioned, you could uninstall anti virus (temp) and uninstall Norton ghost if installed and check for updates for you OS, if there are any updates, install them paying particular attention to the descriptions of the updates, after any updates reinstall anti virus and Norton ghost and try inserting something in USB port (don’t insert a screwdriver, only insert a USB plug)
if still freezing upon USB insertion then the prob is likely with the USB device your inserting a format may solve everything if its a USB pen
BTW: personally, i would format a USB pen with exFAT and do not use FAT32
failing that try updating USB drivers by completely removing all USB drivers and reboot and redetect USB
